Navigating the Dark Side of Metaverse: Unveiling Pros and Cons

As we age, from the 70s to now, scientists and science fiction writers have implanted an idea of another world where a human being is more intelligent, powerful, and skillful to do multiple tasks without the problems we face in reality. This idea has been exposed in cartoons, movies, and in the literature. Psychologists believe that it is the nature of the human brain that it develops the concept by seeing or observing things repeatedly. At one stage he never feels fear of seeing it in real, for example in the 80s when Arcade games were very popular among teens and kids, which can be a part of gambling if a child puts a coin in the machine and starts making a score by playing a game. If he encashs his winning score at the cash counter then I think that he can be rich. Virtual Reality is also an idea that has been implanted in our brain where it has got a new identity as Metaverse. The concept of the metaverse, a virtual reality environment where individuals can engage in various activities, has captured the imagination of tech giants and users alike. However, beneath the allure of this digital realm lies a darker side that warrants exploration. This article delves into the pros and cons of the metaverse, shedding light on its potential pitfalls and benefits.

What is the Metaverse?

In 2019, Facebook introduced Facebook Horizon, a social VR world. By 2021, the company rebranded as "Meta Platforms," with Mark Zuckerberg leading the charge towards developing a metaverse. Despite Meta Platforms' promotion of virtual reality technologies, many are still in the works. Criticism from Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen highlighted concerns that Meta's growth-focused initiatives may compromise platform safety. Horizon Worlds, a Meta project, faced backlash for issues like sexual harassment. In 2021, Meta incurred significant losses exceeding $10 billion in its metaverse development division, with Zuckerberg anticipating further losses in 2022. In a February 2023 Facebook post, Zuckerberg announced a shift away from the metaverse to prioritize AI development.
Certain metaverse applications incorporate Digital Currencies, notably Crypto Currency, with assets traded as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and ownership tracked via Blockchain technology.
Before delving into its darker aspects, let's first understand what the metaverse entails. Coined by science fiction writer Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel "Snow Crash," the metaverse refers to a collective virtual shared space, typically accessed through the internet, where users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users in real time. Here I want to add that many Hollywood movies have been made on this topic where the writers have expressed their hidden messages in the plot of the movie, like 'Disclosure', 'The Lawnmower Man', 'Ready Player One, and the most popular one known as 'The Matrix'. In the '90s and later, gaming console manufacturing companies made some gears to try the initial stage of virtual reality with a limited virtual world (space) to explore. It's envisioned as a vast, interconnected network of virtual worlds, games, and simulations, blurring the lines between physical and digital realities.

Understanding the Dark Side of Metaverse

It has been observed that the importance of Crypto Currency, and the Blockchain is the one of key factors along with development in the gaming industries, programming languages, Artificial Intelligence, and the advancement in the hardware. People around the world, who are investing in this business to secure their digital life for the future. Mostly motivational speakers and their influencers are using new technology and the different platforms on the net to convince common people to get rich by investing in future technology. It looks fake and many people around the world are benefitting a few people or companies who are getting rich by using such schemes in the market where the investment and its profit on the trading market base are virtual (doesn't exist real) all the digital numbers which are alive and exist if all the computers on the world are working and are connected each other. The metaverse's dark side is multifaceted, encompassing issues such as cybersecurity threats, privacy concerns, and the proliferation of illicit activities within this virtual space. Cybersecurity experts have raised alarms about the emergence of the "dark verse," a shadowy corner of the metaverse where criminal elements thrive due to lax regulations and oversight[2]. This unregulated terrain poses risks ranging from intellectual property theft to privacy violations and criminal transactions[2].

  3. Virtual Property Rights and Ownership: In virtual environments within the metaverse, users may invest significant time, effort, and resources into acquiring virtual assets, such as virtual real estate, digital collectibles, and virtual currencies. However, the absence of clear legal frameworks governing virtual property rights and ownership raises questions about ownership, transferability, and enforcement of rights within virtual spaces. Disputes over virtual property rights can arise, leading to legal complexities and challenges in resolving conflicts.
  4. Ethical Dilemmas and Social Impact: The metaverse presents a host of ethical dilemmas and social impact considerations, ranging from issues of consent and digital rights to the impact on real-world communities and environments. Questions surrounding digital consent, user autonomy, and the commodification of virtual experiences raise ethical concerns that must be addressed to ensure the responsible development and use of the metaverse.
  5. Digital Divide and Inequality: Despite its promise of global connectivity, the metaverse may exacerbate existing inequalities and widen the digital divide. Socioeconomic factors, geographic location, and access to technology can create barriers to entry, excluding marginalized communities from fully participating in the digital realm. Without equitable access to immersive technologies and digital infrastructure, the metaverse risks perpetuating disparities and excluding those who lack the resources to engage with virtual environments.
